Towering, otherworldly rock formations and narrow canyon walls — one of the most jaw-dropping and photographed spots in eastern Oregon. An easy day trip from camp.
A scenic stretch of the Owyhee country worth the drive, with a full write-up on the blog covering what to see and how to get there.
Dramatic clay cliffs that rise like ruins out of the desert floor. Quiet, remote, and unforgettable at golden hour.
About 20 minutes from camp — great fishing and boating, with stocked trout for the anglers. Bring the boat; there's room to park it back at your site.
White-water rafting roughly 30 minutes away when the season's running — one of the West's great remote float trips.
One of the best-preserved ghost towns in the West, just over the Idaho line. In the 1880s Silver City was a booming gold and silver town of around 2,500 people; today its weathered 19th-century buildings still stand, including the historic Idaho Hotel. It's about a 20-mile drive on dirt road from Jordan Valley (via Yturri Boulevard and Trout Creek Road) — figure an hour, bring a high-clearance vehicle, and know the road's typically only open from Memorial Day into early October, and gets muddy when it rains.
Where three forks of the Owyhee River meet, with riverside warm springs beneath a waterfall — one of the most remote soaking spots in all of Oregon. Be honest with yourself about this one: it's roughly 40 miles south of camp, the dirt road is poorly maintained and high-clearance 4WD only, there's no cell service, and reaching the springs means river crossings on foot. A genuine adventure for the well-prepared — never attempt it in wet weather, and tell someone your plans before you go.
Oregon's longest lake at 52 miles, winding through a deep canyon of colorful volcanic rock. It's a warmwater fishing favorite — largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, and the occasional stocked rainbow trout — and some of the best scenery is only reachable by boat. You can launch at the Leslie Gulch ramp or at Lake Owyhee State Park. The access roads are narrow and steep in places, so drive slowly, and check water levels before you tow a boat down.
This is remote, beautiful country — cell service is limited (T-Mobile only) and towns are far apart. Bring groceries, water, and a full tank, and let someone know your plans. Then enjoy having it nearly to yourself.
Book your site and explore the Owyhees by day, settle in by the lawn at night.
